Brief:
| An existing traffic island on the campus of Villanova University was retrofitted to become a bio-infiltration BMP. It was designed to capture the first inch of runoff from the 1.21 acre drainage area (0.449ac impervious, 0.714 ac pervious), representing about 80% of the total annual rainfall. Existing soil was excavated and mixed with 50% sand to create a very sandy media and then backfilled. The site was than planted with a variety of native vegetation. Runoff is diverted from the road drainage system into the BMP in three locations. There are two curb cuts to direct flow from the parking lot and road and a third inlet from a modified storm drain/culvert system. Once bypass occurs, runoff is diverted back to this original drainage system.
