In Brief:
The primary role of the Safe Drain is SPCC compliance, i.e. it allows the user to isolate a storm drain and thereby contain any spill of a hazardous material that might occur nearby. The spilled material is prevented from entering the storm drain system and is easily cleaned up, thereby eliminating expensive remediation and/or fines. Secondarily the Safe Drain is a storm water BMP. It is designed to trap sediment (see case study) and to filter hydrocarbon "sheen" as they may be entrained in storm water runoff. The Safe Drain is also often used as a pretreatment device for other BMPs such as Oil Water Separators and vault systems. The Safe Drain protects these down stream BMPs from the catastrophic consequences of hazardous material spills as well as significantly reducing the sediment loading. The storm drain insert as manufactured by Safe Drain, Inc., and is custom constructed of stainless steel, to closely fit the dimensions and shape of the catch basin. The insert is flanged on the top in order for the flange to rest upon the grate support ring. There is a butterfly type shut off valve mounted on a shallow flanged opening in the bottom of the insert. The butterfly valve is equipped with an offset wheel type actuator for ease of operation without removing the catch basin grate. Depth of the insert may not be less than 8.5”. Both valve and insert body shall be constructed of 12 or 14 gauge 304 stainless steel depending upon the size of the catch basin. Optionally, there may be a filter canister mounted on top of the butterfly valve for removal of stormwater pollutants. Filter media may vary depending upon the type of pollutant that needs to be removed. Each Safe Drain is custom built to fit the size and configuration of the catch basin for which it is intended. Pricing is based upon dimensions of the catch basin and size of the butterfly valve being utilized.
